Flatbush Eats: Food, Survival, and Celebration

Maple Street Community Garden is participating in Flatbush Eats: Food, Survival, and Celebration, a project spearheaded by Voices of Lefferts. As a local space focused on gardening, food education, and community gathering, the Garden is very excited to be involved in this project!

Voices of Lefferts will engage community members, including Maple Street Community Garden, in writing workshops, oral history interviews, and a series of public events geared toward eliciting stories, recipes, knowledge, cultural histories, and celebrations of food. Together we will investigate food-related themes such as:

1. the pleasures of food (cooking, recipes, community, culture)
2. local food production (gardens, restaurants, cafés, front-line workers, small-business owners)
3. food distribution (markets, mutual aid, delivery people)
4. food and culture (diverse local food practices, rituals, traditions)
5. food insecurity (mutual aid, hunger, COVID 19)
6. food and women (social reproduction, caregiving, nursing, economy of food)
7. food and environment (climate change, pesticides, water and air pollution, processing and shipping)
