In memoriam, the Maple Street Community Garden would like to honor our dear friend and founding member, Tom La Farge, who passed away in late October of 2020. Click here to read our tributes.
The Maple Street Community Garden is a multipurpose garden and community space located in the Prospect Lefferts Gardens neighborhood of Brooklyn, established in 2012 by residents of the neighborhood.
The mission of the Maple Street Community Garden is to foster community and cultivate a peaceful and joyous place to serve everyone. We are dedicated to providing a safe and brave space for community members to gather, regardless of their race, age, religion, educational background, class, sexuality, gender identity, immigration status, disability and access needs, or any other marginalized status. Discriminitory language and behavior is not acceptable. As a community, we will hold each other accountable.
We hope to achieve our mission by:
Creating a space for the community to grow and harvest organic fruits and vegetables and to compost food scraps.
Providing access to the fresh food we grow and to other locally-grown foods though low cost or free programs like the Fresh Food Box.
Providing local residents a community gathering space and a place to enjoy nature.
Creating a teaching and learning atmosphere where gardening, composting, and other sustainable environmental practices can be tried out and shared.
Building relationships among garden members, our neighbors, community organizations, and nearby schools.
