City Council quickly approves garden acquisition

By Emily Leshner

Today marks the official end of the Uniform Land Review Process, better known as ULURP, which had occupied the efforts of Maple Street Community Garden members and community land advocacy group 596 Acres for the past few years. The end comes after City Council swiftly approved the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation proposal to acquire the garden.

Earlier this month, several garden members and a representative from 596 Acres spoke at a City Planning Commission in support of the proposal. After the proposal was unanimously approved by the commission, it was passed to City Council.

The purchase of the lot on which the garden sits is expected to be completed sometime next year.
