Weekend Garden work sessions!

This weekend the volunteers had plenty to focus on- Lory led a few of the team members in building a new home for our leaves. Delia gathered up our volunteer seed starts and began to plot out their summer residencies in our hex beds. We all admired the newly installed fence that encloses our new next door neighbor: an NYC Park!

Garden Work Sesh!

Today the Gardening Committee planted zinnias, marigolds and calendulas in pots that will be placed about the garden for beauty and to help draw pollinators to our raised vegetable beds. We also protected the vegetable seedlings given to us by GreenThumb from drying out by sinking them, still in their plastic containers, in the soil of one bed. Next Saturday (May 15) people will bring the seedlings they started at home to the garden, and, once we see what we have, we will come up with a plan about what to plant where and begin planting the beds. While we were busy with the plants, other volunteers were creating structures out of cattle panel and bamboo for the plants that like to climb. Another set of folks was busy cleaning up the garden in preparation for the new fences which the city began installing this week.

Join MTOPP For An Earth Day Action – Save BBG!

This Thursday, April 22nd, celebrate Earth Day by gathering at noon at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Eastern Parkway entrance to show support for the BBG's Fight for Sunlight Campaign

Come One, Come All United to save Brooklyn Botanical Gardens and Jackie Robinson Playground from any proposal to ignore the 1991 Community Plan which was put in place to prevent building heights that would destroy the Gardens.

Remember: Wear a flower in your hair and/or lapel!!

Right now buildings on the eastern side of the BBG are capped at 70 feet to protect the plant life in the gardens, but a developer is asking the city to waive those height limits so he can build a massive 39-story complex at 960 Franklin Ave. The proposed development will cast the BBG and nearby Jackie Robinson Playground into shadows for hours every day. The demonstration on Thursday is being called by Movement to Protect the People (https://mtopp.org). Come out and make your voices heard!
